Based on a research about Folk Dance, Swiss Gymnastics is playing with stereotypes of Swiss identity, revealing national identities as constructions and questioning mindsets about "originality" and "purity" of cultures.
Commonly understood as symbols for national identity, folklore is a constitutive element of Nation building processes in the 19th century. Though a closer look at the subject shows that dance-cultures never respected national boundaries and have always been influencing each others, actually they are in the literal sense ‘composed by foreign steps’.
